Bristol Workshops

Some of our most popular classes are now available in Bristol, hosted at the wonderful Hamilton House. After the enormous popularity of our Bristol Whittling Workshops we’ve made them a permanent fixture and introduced Bowl Carving to the roster, with plans in store for more of our classes to make the journey south!

Whittling and Bowl Carving workshops both make a fantastic introduction to traditional woodwork, allowing you to craft beautiful items out of fresh wood using nothing but hand tools. Anyone not based in London who’s keen to get into Spoon Carving should check out Online Membership for everything you need to learn from home.

A one day introduction to bowl carving

10am to 4:30pm

Based @ Hamilton House

Our popular bowl carving workshop has come to Bristol!

Learn to make a beautiful wooden bowl from native green hardwood using ancient hand tools. The adze, used to hollow out the bowl, has been in our culture since the stone age and is a wonderful introduction to the other traditional edge tools used to create your bowl. Over the course of the day you will use an axe, drawknife and pushknife to shape the outside of the bowl, and a gouge, scorp and hook knife to refine the inside.

In addition to giving you an introduction to a variety of hand tools, this course will give you a real insight into the three dimensional functionality of an object which has been used by humans for thousands of years.

Our bowl carving course runs from 10:00 to 16:30, during which time you will learn many different carving techniques, learn about how green wood differs from seasoned wood, and of course, at the end of the day you will take home a beautiful, functional wooden bowl.

2hr Classes | based @ Hamilton House

Our most popular workshop has come to Bristol – now enjoying an extended run due to popular demand!

This is our classic introduction to knife carving, hosted by Hamilton House. We are proud to teach all out whittling workshops with the “Mora 106” Sloyd Knife, the preferred carving knife for professionals and beginners alike.

A 2-hour session, covering a variety of safe knife grips and traditional techniques in the ancient skill of knife carving. At the end of this session you will have carved your very own spatula to take home and use, and will have the knowledge needed to go away and build on what you have learned in your own time.

This workshop is designed to be a wonderful experience on it's own, but is also your gateway to the craft. Knowing how to carve safely and well with a knife is as rewarding as it is empowering. It helps broaden your understanding of wood as a material, gives a solid foundation for your skills in every aspect of traditional woodwork, and you’ll be amazed at how many scenarios in your day to day life that this comes in handy!
