Axe Making Day Class
10am to 4pm
Turn an Old Axe Head into a Beautiful Carving Hatchet
Spend a day taking a stock axe head, carving & fitting a new wooden handle and honing it to a razor sharp edge, before learning to use it by carving a classic wooden tent peg!
The axe is the quintessential woodworking accessory and one of the oldest tools used by mankind.
In this class you’ll use traditional hand tools such as the draw knife and sloyd knife to carve a handle from sturdy ash wood, before learning how to haft it to your axe head, fitting with a wooden wedge and finishing with Swedish linseed oil.
We’ll then sharpen and polish your axe and finish by carving a tent peg as you learn the key skills of traditional axe carving.
You’ll take your new carving axe home with you, and we’ll also discuss some of the basics of tool restoration, maintenance and what makes a good carving axe.
