London’s centre for the traditional craft of Green Woodwork

The Green Wood Guild is a unique organisation that gives it’s members the opportunity to explore the world of traditional woodwork.

We offer a diverse range of courses, workshops and taster sessions in all aspects of green woodwork, including masterclasses led by Barnaby Carder (Barn the Spoon) and Nic Westermann – two world respected leaders in the craft. All based on ancient woodworking skills & techniques, working with traditional hand tools, and using wood straight from the tree, whilst it is still fresh.

Our inclusive course structure is available for anyone to book and is based around a love for the craft and passion for teaching, covering everything from knife carving to furniture making.

Whittling Intro Workshop (BRISTOL)

2hr Classes | based @ Hamilton House

Our most popular workshop has come to Bristol!
This will be a limited run of our introduction to knife carving, hosted by Hamilton House.

Bowl Carving
Bowl Carving

A one day introduction to bowl carving

10am to 6pm

Learn to make a beautiful wooden bowl from native green hardwood using ancient hand tools. The adze, used to hollow out the bowl, has been in our culture since the stone age and is a wonderful introduction to the other traditional edge tools used to create your bowl. Over the course of the day you will use an axe, drawknife and pushknife to shape the outside of the bowl, and a gouge, scorp and hook knife to refine the inside.

In addition to giving you an introduction to a variety of hand tools, this course will give you a real insight into the three dimensional functionality of an object which has been used by humans for thousands of years.

Our bowl carving course runs from 10:00 to 18:00 on a Sunday, during which time you will learn many different carving techniques, you will learn about how green wood differs from seasoned wood, and of course, at the end of the day you will take home a beautiful, functional wooden bowl.
