Bowl Carving Day Class
Bowl Carving Day Class

A one day introduction to bowl carving

10am to 6pm

Learn to make a beautiful wooden bowl from native green hardwood using ancient hand tools. The adze, used to hollow out the bowl, has been in our culture since the stone age and is a wonderful introduction to the other traditional edge tools used to create your bowl. Over the course of the day you will use an axe, drawknife and pushknife to shape the outside of the bowl, and a gouge, scorp and hook knife to refine the inside.

In addition to giving you an introduction to a variety of hand tools, this course will give you a real insight into the three dimensional functionality of an object which has been used by humans for thousands of years.

Our bowl carving course runs from 10:00 to 18:00, during which time you will learn many different carving techniques, learn about how green wood differs from seasoned wood, and of course, at the end of the day you will take home a beautiful, functional wooden bowl.

This is perfect for those that would like to try their hand at everything, or want to lay a solid groundwork for the more in-depth workshops they’ve got their eye on.

Wood Turning Intro –

Covering the basics of turning on a treadle lathe. Starting with a log, you will prepare your billet by splitting it out  using axe, froe and mallet, shaping it on a shavehorse using a drawknife, before turning it on the lathe to make a traditional potato masher. This workshop will immerse you into a time honored craft, as you learn the rhythm of the lathe and how to use 3 types of chisels and gouges effectively. This introductory class is a great way to get a taste for treadle lathe work.

Making a Chopping Board –

A perfect introduction to the use of traditional hand planes, used in almost any joinery or furniture making project. This workshop will teach you the elusive art of taking a rough surface and planing it perfectly smooth and flat, as you make a simple, beautiful chopping board for your kitchen.

Handle and Sheath Making Day Workshop

9am – 5pm

Our knife handle and sheath making class taught by Emma F V Smith at the Green Wood Guild will guide you through making a personalised handle and sheath for a blade. Take those blades that have been sitting in the drawer for years and turn them into a stunning tool that will serve you well for life!

Over the course of the workshop you will learn how to make a sloyd knife handle from a block of wood, in the style of Emma’s own knives, a skill that can be transferred and adapted to many blade types and tools. Emma will provide multiple templates for the handle shape, which you will be welcome to adapt and personalise as you carve. You will then hand stitch either a leather blade slip or a full leather sheath (up to you!) to protect your blade. At the end of the day, you will walk away with the perfect wood carving tool that can be used for everything from spoons to shrink pots, as well as being useful in many other larger projects.

This class is suitable for people with no handle or sheath making experience.

A knife blade can be provided on the day (+£15), or you can bring your own (must be a sloyd blade between 35-100mm and we need you to provide dimensions prior to the workshop). If you would like a blade to be provided please email info@thegreenwoodguild.com once you have booked your place
