Sharpening Workshop
Sharpening Workshop

Create and maintain a perfect edge on your spoon carving tools

10am to 6pm

Learn to create and maintain a perfect edge on your spoon carving tools. This class will cover a wide range of techniques and theory whilst giving you time to put your new skills in to action, creating a razor sharp edge on a tool of your own (we can supply tools if you’d rather).

The focus of the day will be sharpening a straight knife but will also cover techniques used for a spoon knife and axe. If there is a specific tool that you’d like to sharpen beyond these, please get in touch and we’ll let you know if it’s possible.

All courses take place at our workshop on Stepney City Farm, Stepney Way, London, E1 3DG unless otherwise stated

Handle & Sheath Making Workshop
Handle & Sheath Making Workshop

Learn to handle, adapt & protect the edges of your tools

10am to 6pm

A must-have skill for any woodworker is knowing how to look after your tools.

Spend the day making and fitting handles and sheaths for knives, spoon knives and axes. You can make a friction fit or birch bark sheath for a straight knife, a wooden swivel lid spoon knife sheath and carve and fit a handle for your knife or axe. Most people complete a handle and sheath in a day – although this does depend on complexity. Those with experience may be able to complete more than a handle and a sheath.

You could bring a single blade and carve and fit the handle before making a sheath or bring two unsheathed tools and make sheaths for both. If you’re keen to try hafting, you could carve a handle and fit an axe head as well as making a simple knife sheath.

Bring your own blades (we’ll need to see them in advance) or we can supply. Once booked, we’ll be in touch in advance of the class to confirm what you’d like to do and make sure we have the correct materials for your tools.

Bowl or Kuksa Carving Day Workshop
Bowl or Kuksa Carving Day Workshop

A one day introduction to carving hollow forms

10am to 6pm

Learn to make a beautiful wooden bowl or kuksa from native green hardwood using ancient hand tools. The adze, used to hollow out the bowl, has been in our culture since the stone age and is a wonderful introduction to the other traditional edge tools used to create your bowl. Over the course of the day you will use an axe and drawknife to shape the outside of the bowl, and a gouge and hook knife to refine the inside.

Or you could turn your hand to carving a beautiful kuksa – a traditional scandinavian style of drinking cup. The ideal tool for drinking coffee develops a rich patina from the coffee grounds. Most folk that start to use them become inseperable from them. Great to use at home but also much better in a backpack than a fragile and heavy ceramic mug.

In addition to giving you an introduction to a variety of hand tools, this course will give you a real insight into the design and function of objects which has been used by humans for thousands of years.

This class runs from 10:00 to 18:00, during which time you will learn many different carving techniques, learn about how green wood differs from seasoned wood, and of course, at the end of the day you will take home a beautiful, functional wooden bowl.
