Evening Whittling Workshops

Thursday Evenings, 7pm – 9pm

Our Autumn series of evening whittling workshops aims to introduce you to the basics of working with green wood. Perfect for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the world of woodwork, book on one of them, or book on all of them for a thorough introduction to green wood carving.

Spatula Carving 22nd September

Spatulas are one of the true workhorses of the kitchen. Why not learn how to carve your own, to whatever design you want? Come and learn the basics of green wood carving, using a Mora straight knife and a piece of green wood to carve a beautiful spatula, ready to be put to use.

Butter Spreader Carving 29th September

Learn how to carve a Swedish style butter spreader using basic knife grips and lovely green wood. Also perfect to use for serving condiments.

Miniature Bowl Carving 6th October

Learn the basics of making hollow forms using vices and spoon knives. This course teaches you how to read and work with wood grain in hollow forms, which is transferrable to other projects such as spoons, kuksas and larger bowls. Take home a perfect salt pinch pot or jewellery dish.

Mindful Carving 13th October

Wind down after a day’s work on our mindful whittling class. This class focuses on the mindful act of whittling, the skills and process, rather than the final outcome. A lovely way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, put your phone away for two hours and relax taking beautiful curly shavings. A perfect intro to carving – the skills you learn are adaptable to any carving situation.

Whittling for Potters 20th October

Whittling opens up the opportunities for creation of your own tools! Come and learn how to whittle your own potters tools – we will focus on making a potter’s rib and a simple modelling tool, both to the maker’s own design. You will leave the class with an understanding of basic carving techniques, enabling you to carve your own tools going forward.

Come for a day and make a stool or a whole weekend and take home a bench!

These workshops run concurrently – so if you’d like to book a day making a stool, you can book either day or book the whole weekend to make the bench

Perfect for absolute beginners.

Master some of the core aspects of furniture making, as you craft a simple, robust and beautiful 3-legged stool from cleft chestnut and seasoned hardwood seat. On this course you learn core skills and techniques of traditional furniture making, including using shavehorses, drawknives, and planes, and constructing solid joints with age old through and wedged round tenons.

For someone who wants to invest a little more time in creating a larger piece of furniture for the home – our tutor Tim will take you through how to make a beautiful bench over the weekend. You will learn core skills and techniques of traditional furniture making, and use the Japanese scorching technique of Shou Sugi Ban to take a recycled scaffold plank to a gorgeous finish. Leaving with a completed bench, without the need for nails.

One day workshop 9am to 5pm

These knife forging classes taught by Tom at the Green Wood Guild guide you through making your very own carving knife. Being able to take a rough bit of stock steel and turn it into a beautifully functioning edge tool is extremely satisfying, and very empowering!

On this one-day class you will learn how to make a ‘straight’ knife, the perfect wood carving tool used for everything from spoons to shrink pots, as well as being useful in many other larger projects. This class is suitable for people with no tool making experience. You will forge and sharpen your own blade, as well as carving the handle, and weaving a bark sheath to protect it, walking away with a beautiful new tool!
