Bench Making Weekend Workshop
Bench Making Weekend Workshop

Sat & Sun | 10-6pm

Make a beautiful bench from recycled timber, using classic woodworking techniques. All exclusively with the use of hand tools, complete with drawbore joints and tapered mortise and tenons. Suitable for absolute beginners.

Over the weekend you will shape your legs, form solid joints and use a scorching technique to take a recycled scaffold plank to a gorgeous burnt finish. Leaving with a completed bench, without the need for nails or power tools.

Joinery is a core aspect of woodwork – to the extent that it may be the only aspect that the average person is aware of. At the Green Wood Guild we know that this is not the case, but we hugely value the role joinery plays in our craft. In this class you will learn to use shavehorses and drawknives, tapered tenon cutters, and reamers, as well as how to drill with accuracy, and how to use drawbore joints, one of our favourite joints here at the Green Wood Guild.

Kuksa Carving Weekend Workshop

Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 5pm

Kuksa Carving with Alexander Yerks

Over this two  day course you will be fully immersed in the world of  kuksa carving. The goal of the workshop is to build a relationship with each of the tools we will be using while gaining an understanding of how they work in relation to the timber itself. This is a great course aimed at both beginners and more experienced wood carvers. We will be swinging axes and adzes, and using specialty gouges, hook tools, and the humble, but versatile, sloyd knife. This is a very unique opportunity because you will be learning to safely use such a large array of tools while developing techniques which bridge the gap between spoon and bowl carving.

The course will cover just about all you need to know, including sourcing wood, decorative carving, learning my unique and advanced hollowing techniques. We will even discuss tool maintenance.

Some specialty bespoke adzes and gouges will be used. In addition, some lovely green wood will be provided that you will transform from raw material to a fine drinking vessel by the end of the course.

The goal of this workshop is to gain confidence in yourself and the tools being used. We will spend two our days building a relationship with each specific tool – the axe, adze, gouge, froe, and straight and hooked knives. This is the key to understanding the function of tool and timber.

Alex Yerks travels internationally and teaches green woodworking for a living year round.

He has been carving professionally with axe and knife for most of a decade – with many of my iconic styles, design details, and techniques emerging over that time. Production techniques became instinctive and second nature, but his creative direction constantly evolves and changes. Each piece of wood has its own characteristics, and knowing how to make the very best of these situations is something he’s focused on for years.

Framesaw Day Class
Framesaw Day Class

10am-6pm

An introduction to the core skills of joinery, whilst making your own beautiful frame saw. Suitable for absolute beginners.

Framesaws are an ingenious, versatile design using the tensile strength of the wood and a french twist to hold the cutting blade in tension. This allows the use of a thin blade that can be used to cut curves, as well as thicker blades for cutting straight lines. The blade can be easily adjusted and changed to suit the task at hand, making them a fantastic tool for spoon carving as well as classic joinery.

You will leave this class with a fully functional, traditional framesaw of your own making, using classic blind mortise and tenon joints. We also teach you how to prep your materials – making the wood true and square, and how to mark out and cut joints using traditional tools & techniques.

The process covers accurate & efficient use of handsaws, planes and chisels, as well as tool maintenance and sharpening.

Joinery is a core aspect of woodwork – to the extent that it may be the only aspect that the average person is are aware of. At the Green Wood Guild we know that this is not the case, but we hugely value the role joinery plays in our craft.
